‘First Friend’ is the debut release of Norwegian artist Frøkedal. ‘First Friend’ features a strange and unsettling, but beautiful contrast between strong electronic, expansive instrumentation and delicate, fragile sounding vocals. With the starkness between these two key elements being the main way the song draws the listener in. Frøkedal’s delivery of her vocals make the otherwise vast song, sound incredibly intimate, thus making the song feel direct and personal.

Sonically Frøkedal uses a plethora of electronic and synthetic sounds, from the pulsating bass heard at the intro, to the clean electronic guitar tone heard at the 45 second mark, (that reminds me of the guitar part heard in Sóley’s Halloween). Frøkedal has created a vast sounding piece of ambitious, sonically complex and highly original music for her debut, and I for one can’t wait to hear what she will create in the future.
