Amandla Stenberg's 18-minute short film Blue Girls Burn Fast, which served as her application to NYU's film programme, was released on Vimeo this week. It's the latest creative accomplishment in a string of incredible things the 17 year old has achieved recently - creating comic books, releasing music, and winning awards - demonstrating a tender balance between funny asides (a jibe at Rachel Dolezal, the stand-out line "he's not a Mac DeMarco fuck boy more like an Elliott Smith sad boy") and a more tender sensitivity to the complexities of changing relationships. Stenberg described the film as "very personal to my heart", and it's clear through the tender filming and subtle details just how sympathetically she approached the film. One more short film from 2014 is public on Stenberg's Vimeo profile, and it's exciting to watch how has progressed already, and to anticipate what will come next.
